CARAVAGGIO: MURDERER OR GENIUS?

CARAVAGGIO: MURDERER OR GENIUS?

15th March 2022

Speaker: Julia Musgrave

For many, Caravaggio (1571-1610) is famed as much for his art as for his criminal record.

His paintings inspired many artists during his lifetime and would go on to influence many more, from Orazio Gentileschi to Peter Paul Rubens, Gerard van Honthorst and Rembrandt who each absorbed a different aspect of Caravaggio’s work.

Julia Musgrave follows the dramatic incidents of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s life and looks at why and how his influence spread and gave rise to the international movement known as ‘Caravaggism’.

Arts Society lecturer Julia Musgrave’s first degree is in Chemical Engineering. She is now an art historian with degrees in Arts. She teaches Art History at the City Literary Institute (City Lit) and is Co-Director of The London Art Salon
