Speaker: Jackie Klein

Serious art was ‘Men’s Work’ at the time when Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Marie Bracquemond, Eva Gonzales, Cecilia Beaux and Louise-Catherine Breslau were women impressionist artists.

It was a time when women were frowned upon for being out in public without a guardian and were not allowed into the bars and cafes that male artists could frequent. We look at how their subject-matter, painting styles and attitudes differ from their male counterparts and why they were written out of the history books until recently.

A newly accredited Arts Society lecturer, Jacky Klein is an art historian, publisher, writer and broadcaster. She is an experienced lecturer and teacher in museums and galleries, and arts institutions.
