Speaker: Sophie Matthews

Many of our historical references for musical instruments can be found in works of art. The works of great painters including Brueghel, Hogarth and Rigaud feature woodwind instruments and allow us to see what they looked like. As well as explaining the social context and the development of the instruments, Sophie Matthews lets us hear what they sounded like as she plays her replica instruments.

One of the foremost players of the English border bagpipes and other early woodwind instruments, Sophie Matthews is one half of the touring balladeers, GreenMatthews, and a new Arts Society lecturer.
