Speaker: Howard Smith

An entertaining and nostalgic end to our 2020-2021 Programme as Howard Smith talks about the GPO Film Unit’s 'Night Mail' with poetry by W H Auden and music by Benjamin Britten.

Howard shows clips from earlier Victorian and Edwardian films as he tells us about the birth of documentary films in the 1930s through the experimental Soviet era to the 129 films produced by the GPO Film Unit in seven years.

Popular Arts Society lecturer Howard Smith is a retired graphic designer who worked for UK and International Advertising Agencies before starting his own marketing and print company.
