JOHN SINGER SARGENT - MUCH MORE THAN A MODERN VAN DYCK

JOHN SINGER SARGENT - MUCH MORE THAN A MODERN VAN DYCK

21st September 2021

11.30 a.m.

Speaker: Frank Woodgate

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was the great society portraitist of the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, and this lecture examines his varied and imaginative work alongside some of the great art of Anthony van Dyck, with whom he was compared by Rodin.

However, Sargent was not just a portrait painter, and Frank Woodgate will show us the extremely varied and surprising breadth of Sargent’s work ranging from his wonderful portraits to his landscape and seascape paintings - inspired by the Impressionists - and his work as an official Great War Artist.

This includes his extremely beautiful and delicate watercolours.

Frank Woodgate is a lecturer at Tate Britain and Tate Modern, and a lecturer for the Arts Society, the Art Fund, the National Trust, U3A and other organisations. He lectures and runs courses at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester.
